The Latest Makeup Trend Is The Reverse Cat Eye

By Sophie Joaman • August 2, 2022 • 5 mins read

We love learning new makeup techniques and with so many beauty trends floating around on social media, now is the perfect time to brush up on those skills.

One trend that has recently been flooding TikTok and one that you need to know about is the reverse cat-eye.

The reverse cat eye might be summer ‘22s hottest eye makeup trend but the technique itself is anything but new to the world of makeup.

What goes around comes right back around in makeup and this cyclical nature of trends means that the reverse cat-eye is having its moment all over again.

Not that it even went anywhere in the first place. With the reverse cat-eye being such a statement trend, it only seems right therefore that we share everything you need to know about it and most importantly, how you can recreate the look for yourself at home.

What is the Reverse Cat-Eye Trend?

The reverse cat-eye is exactly what you think it is. Rather than a classic winged liner on the upper eyelid, the action with this trend is concentrated on the bottom lid and lash line.

It’s the perfect style for anyone who loves their smokey eye makeup and lives for that full lash line, ‘full of glam’ vibe.

With the reverse cat-eye, however, instead of simply filling in your water line, a sharp wing is created to extend the eyes (like you would on the top lid) with the effect being a beautiful feline shape.

It’s sultry, sexy and really opens up your eyes.

Thankfully the reverse cat-eye is also flattering for each and every eye shape, so there really is no reason not to give it a go.

How to do the Reverse Cat-Eye Trend

One of the best things about this makeup trend is just how easy it is to create yourself with a few products and tools. You really can get the most perfect reverse cat-eye look within just a few simple steps.

Step 1: Line Your Waterline

Starting off with a pencil liner fill in your waterline, making sure to take the line all the way to the inner corner of your eye (up to your tear ducts).

Then, do the same with the outer corner of your eyelid, taking the line slightly further than you would normally.

This will become the starting point for your wing in the next stage.

Step 2: Create Your Wing

Now is the time to get working on that wing. With the same pencil liner, start from the outer corner of your eye and map out where you would like your wing to sit.

You want your wing to be at a slight angle so that you can really elongate the shape of your eye and get that ultimate feline shape.

Once you know exactly where it will be, draw on a wing, making sure that it is sharp and aligns with the shape of your eye.

It’s also good to remember that a wing does not need to be thick. Start off with a narrow line and build up from there if you do want a more dramatic look.

Step 3: Blend With Eyeshadow

Taking a dark shade of eyeshadow and your brush, blend the wing you have just drawn to blur any harsh lines and create that soft smokey look. Using a small angled eyeliner brush can really come in handy here.

This will help to keep your wing looking sharp yet smokey at the same time. With the same shade of eyeshadow, you now want to ensure that you are blending in the rest of your liner by placing the shadow under your lid and bringing the look together.

Blend all the way to your tear ducts for a stunningly strong finish.

Another pro tip is to blend your shadow slightly above the wing (where you would create a classic wing on the upper eyelid) this is great for anyone who wants a more dramatic full-glam look.

You don’t want the wing to sit too high, but a slightly smokey look around that area can really bring out your eyes all the more.

Step 4: Define Your Liner

The final step of your reverse cat-eye routine is really going to add that extra depth that will make your eyes pop. Take a liquid eyeliner and add in that definition to your wing.

This will clean up any areas that need it and tie your look together.

As for the rest of your eye makeup- curl your lashes and add a few layers of mascara for extra boldness.

The reverse cat-eye is the trend to try out right now. Rather than a classic wing, the reverse or backwards cat-eye is focused on the bottom eyelid.

To achieve the backwards cat-eye, fill in the waterline and extend the line out from the outer corner of your eye.

Create a strong, sharp wing and blend with dark eyeshadow for a smokey look. Your eyes will look open and elongated for a truly sultry makeup style.

We love it. Social media loves it. Will you be trying out the reverse cat-eye?
