The Lip Liner And Lip Gloss Look

By Sophie Joaman • March 16, 2023 • 4 mins read

Throughout the decades, lipstick, liner and gloss have been the holy trinity for creating the perfect pout.

In fact, lip liner and gloss were often thought to be the loyal accompaniments to lipstick, which has reigned supreme over the years. But what if we were to tell you that this year’s hottest lip trend requires just liner and gloss?

Although the lip liner and lip gloss trend is having a moment in 2023, it is actually a trend that has proven time and time again just why it is so popular.

Particularly when lipsticks were the most obvious choice. The trend of using more natural tones and adding a glossy finish was appealing to so many people who wanted a more understated vibe to their makeup with all of the glamour still intact.

For a lot of people, this might already be one of their go-to styles. For others, it might be a one or the other situation.

But for those who are looking for one of the easiest lip trends out there to try right now, it’s all about the super duo, the liner and gloss.

Want to know how to get the lip liner and gloss trend down in just a few quick steps, then keep reading because we’ve got the easiest tutorial you’ll ever need.

How To Do The Trend

The liner and lip gloss trend is so easy to do, you can do it on the go in just three straightforward steps.

Moisturise With A Balm

Before going in with your liner, it’s always a good idea to moisturise your lips with a lip balm. This will allow your lip liner to glide on effortlessly and prevent it from settling into any fine lines.

Balm will also keep your lip liner from drying out and fading throughout the day so that you won’t have to retouch your lips later on. Just apply it all over your lips and you’re good to move onto the liner.

Apply Your Lip Liner

The most important part of this look is the lip liner, but it’s by no means difficult to get right. The hardest part of this comes with choosing the right liner for you and even then it’s not hard to choose a colour that you love.

You could keep this look understated, in which case you’re likely going to want a liner in a nude shade that compliments your natural lip shade.

Of course, no one is saying you have to just stick to nudes. The main thing is to forward plan a little and choose a lip liner and gloss that complement each other and most crucially, complement you.

To get the best look out of your liner, be sure to trace the outside of your lip without taking the liner up too high.

Instead, you can take the liner inwards to add some depth. Or if you want a bolder style, fill in your entire lip with the liner. Whichever style you go for, make sure that your outer lines are sharp and crisp.

You can also blend any rough edges with your fingers/a small precision brush, so don’t be too worried if you are slightly heavy-handed with it at first.

Apply Your Gloss

The final step towards the super duo combo requires a good amount of gloss. You can use a clear gloss or a tinted gloss for this step, so think about the style you are going for.

Natural or bold, you’ll be able to make the best decision based on how you feel.

To finish your liner/gloss look, add an even layer of gloss across the lip and let it set in slightly. Be sure however not to go in with too much gloss at first, as this can just make you feel uncomfortable.

However, if you do feel as if you need more lip gloss after applying, you can always add a little. For dry lips, you can even use a moisturising lip gloss that will refrain from drying out throughout the day.

Will you be trying out the lip liner and lip gloss trend this year? Whether you’re faithful to your lipsticks or stick to liner/gloss only.

Switching it up a little can be a great chance to try out a new trend that will make your lips pop in the best ways.
