Sweating is a natural human response to a rise in body temperature. We all experience it from time to time and in most cases, it’s good for us. Like when we go to the gym- we want to sweat out those toxins.
When we’ve spent ages on our make-up though, not so much. When you put your make-up on, you want it to last and you want to feel your best in it.
We get it! Knowing that every woman who wears make-up has experienced a make-up meltdown is definitely reassuring, especially when social media makes us think otherwise.
On the flip side, it can also seem like there’s no solution to winning against sweat, even in the dead of summer. You might even be wondering if there is any point in wearing make-up during the hotter months.
And to that, we say yes. Yes, there is a way to wear make-up and keep it looking fresh.
How do you do that exactly? It’s funny you asked because we just so happen to have a few sweatproof make-up hacks up our sleeve. You’ll look hot, but your make-up will stay cool.
Prime. Prime. Prime.
Prepping your face before putting make-up on is one of the most important, if not the most important thing you can do to stop sweat from ruining your make-up.
A well-primed base will ensure that your make-up does not budge as easily, even on a hot day. If you have oily or combination-type skin, sweating can speed up the process of your make-up ‘melting’ or slipping.
Choosing a lightweight primer, therefore, such as one with a silicone base can create a smooth surface and minimize pores.
After your skin-care routine, choose a long-lasting primer and apply it all over your face, making sure that you leave it to absorb into the skin well before moving on to your foundation application.
Leaving the primer to sink into the skin will help to absorb any excess natural oils on the skin and keep your foundation where it should be if you do begin to sweat during the day. It is also a good idea to prime your eyelids.
Priming your eyes often gets overlooked, but applying a very small amount of eye primer before any eyeshadow can not only keep your eye makeup from smudging but can also keep it vibrant.
Dusting a light layer of setting powder over your skin post-foundation can work wonders on the finished result of your foundation.
Sweat can react with the natural oils in your skin and as a result, you may find that you’ve ended up with a rather greasy look. That’s why applying a translucent powder to the skin directly after your foundation can help to stop that from happening in the first place.
If you have dry skin, don’t worry, you can still use setting powder too, particularly in the summer when you know that there is a greater chance of your make-up spoiling from sweat.
For those with dry skin, you can dust a light helping of powder only on the areas that you know might be affected by sweat more. The T-Zone, the brow, the forehead and the chin- for example. Use a fluffy brush and dab your powder in well to set your make-up.
If you have oily or combination skin you can also add an extra dab of powder to your skin and leave it to bake for a couple of minutes. This should seal your make-up and make it much less prone to the effects of sweating.
Setting spray is going to be your best friend here, so don’t even think about skipping this step of your make-up routine! A good hack to keep in mind is to use setting spray between each product you use, to set them in place before moving on to the next.
For example, spritz your face after your primer but before your foundation. Spray again after you set your face with powder and again at the very end of your make-up routine.
This layering effect will help your make-up in its place, leaving you looking flawless. Another great tip is to spray your beauty sponge or brush with a little setting spray and then blend your foundation in. Of course, make sure that your spray is completely set into the skin before moving on to the next step.
Thank goodness for waterproof makeup, especially waterproof eye products. Opting for waterproof mascara and eyeliner that won’t budge can really help the longevity of your makeup.
Apply a couple of coats of waterproof mascara to your lashes, leaving them to dry between each round. Then leave to dry for a minute or two after the last coat.
If you do end up sweating throughout the day, your mascara is guaranteed to stay in place for longer without leaving you with panda eyes.
You can also use budge-proof makeup for your lips- Believe it or not! Choose a liquid lip stain that will stay put all day, even if it gets hot.
Start by lining your lips with a lip liner pencil and filling in the inside of your lips slightly with the same shade. Then apply your lip stain and blot to remove any excess.
You will find that your lipstick stays put for much longer without smudging or the need for much reapplication.
A lot of eyeshadow palettes already come in powder forms, more so than cream formulas, but powder eyeshadows are where it is at when it comes to the hotter months.
A cream eyeshadow might seem tempting but sweating can cause it to become creased and can contribute to the rest of your eye makeup budging.
After priming your eyes, add a light base colour (beige, neutrals, light brown, peach etc) to your entire eyelid. You can take this up to your crease and even under your brow to keep any highlight products in place as well.
Next, go in and create your desired eye makeup look with your powder shadows. You might also notice that the powder base will likewise help your eyeliner to stay bold and sharp all day.
Don’t be put off wearing make-up if you happen to sweat a lot. Applying a few tips and tricks here and there can help your make-up to stay looking cool and fresh for much longer.
To avoid sweat ruining your make-up, starting off your routine with a well-prepped and primed base can help to create an even surface that minimizes pores and holds the rest of your make-up in place for longer.
A translucent powder dusted over your face will also absorb any excess oils and sweat that may otherwise cause your make-up to melt.
If there is one product however to start using more, it’s the setting spray. Spritzing spray onto your foundation and at the end of your make-up routine will leave you with gorgeous flawlessness and a refreshed appearance.
If you do happen to sweat the spray and the combination of other make-up products will create somewhat of a barrier to stop your make-up from moving.
As the weather hots up, why not give our sweat-proof hacks a go? We might not be able to stop the sweat, but we can certainly keep our make-up looking its best while wearing it with a huge amount of confidence.
