How To Stop Your Makeup From Creasing

By Sophie Joaman • August 2, 2022 • 7 mins read

When you apply your make-up, you want it to look velvety and flawless all day long. As the day wears on however you might begin to notice that your make-up has actually set into the fine lines and wrinkles of your face.

There are a number of factors that cause makeup creasing to happen, from applying too much product to not applying the correct product formulas for your skin type.

If you have dry skin and are not properly hydrated then you can likely expect your makeup to look cakey and cracked within the lines of your face.

If your skin is oily, too much oil production layered with more oily products can also draw attention to wrinkles and lines.

The good thing is, that make-up creasing has nothing to do with your make-up skills. In fact, with a little bit of work and know-how, you can avoid the midday crease altogether.

To make it easier for you we’ve got a step-by-step guide to walk you through the techniques and the types of products you should be using for less creasing and more wow!

Step 1: Prep your skin.

Creating a smooth base for your make-up is one of the most important things you can do to prevent your make-up from creasing.

A build-up of dirt and impurities can either dry your skin out further or cause an excess of oil production, depending on your natural skin type.

Both factors can then cause make-up to break down and shift during the day which only aids in setting it deeply into the places you don’t want it to.

Prior to applying any makeup, begin by cleansing your skin with a face wash to get rid of any dirt or impurities on the skin surface and avoid any nasties from sitting on your skin.

Next, exfoliate the skin, to ensure that your pores get a deeper clean from any dirt, which in turn will help to stop your makeup from creasing and showing off enlarged pores.

Make sure that all residue is rinsed off with warm water and pat dry to give you the fresh skin that you truly deserve.

After washing, apply a serum and a moisturiser to the skin. A lack of hydration in the skin is one of the main causes of creased makeup in dry skin types.

So ensuring that you use a hydrating moisturiser can stop your make-up from drying into the lines of your face. It is also still important to moisturise your skin if you have an oily complexion.

Opt instead for a lightweight, oil-free formula that will give you a natural shine without the greasiness. This will also maintain a smooth base for your make-up to sit on.

Apply the moisturiser to your face and massage in well, leaving it to absorb for a good amount of time before moving on to the next step. Another great tip for banishing those under-eye creases is to gently apply an eye cream.

As this area of skin is particularly delicate, use your fingertips to tap the cream in and then leave to set for a few minutes.

Step 2: Prime your skin.

After cleansing your face should be prepped well enough to start applying make-up. But first pop on a primer to your skin to create the first flawless base.

Pay particular attention to any dry areas that need a little more attention. Silicone or gel-based primers are perfect for blurring pores and fine lines on your face.

They also create an almost second layer of skin that allows make-up to glide on beautifully giving your naturally gorgeous face a velvety layer that will really allow your make-up to go the extra mile.

Apply the primer to your brush or beauty blender and blend in well to your skin, ensuring that it is set in place before moving on to foundation.

Step 3: Foundation

Choosing the right foundation finish for your skin type is key, as the wrong one will only set into your under-eye creases, fine lines and smile lines.

If you have dry skin, choose a hydrating, dewy foundation as opposed to a more matte finish which will probably cling to the fine lines and wrinkles.

In contrast, if you have oilier skin, a matte foundation will be better for you and will give you a buildable base that won’t budge or move into your lines.

Using your foundation brush or beauty blender, apply a little foundation and blend in well to the skin, neck and hairline.

Using too much foundation can actually cause makeup to slip into the lines and crease even if you have the right product for your skin type.

The best way to combat this is, to begin with, less foundation on your tool and build up from there if desired or even needed.

Step 4: Translucent Powder

Making sure your foundation is completely set before applying powder is a surefire way to avoid makeup that becomes cakey or creased as a result of not being allowed to set well enough.

Doing so will also mean that you will have a silky base that will last longer during the day. Take a fluffy powder brush and apply a little powder to it, dusting lightly over your face.

Like with your foundation, you certainly don’t want to risk putting too much powder onto your face at first, as this will just exacerbate creasing.

Instead, add a light dusting of powder evenly over your face to absorb any oils and keep your make-up from sliding into any creases if you sweat or overheat especially.

If your skin edges more on the dry side, powder can certainly cause creasing and cracking within the base of your make-up. That doesn’t mean you should be apprehensive about using it though.

In fact, powder, especially a subtle translucent powder can benefit the long-lasting effect our your make-up. To avoid creasing, however, apply less powder to any dry area and focus on the parts of your face that get shinier throughout the day instead.

Step 5: Setting Spray.

Setting spray is the final step of your flawless make-up base that will set your make-up in place and actually keep it. Choose a long-lasting setting spray and spritz well onto the face, paying extra attention to any drier patches of skin and the fine lines and wrinkles.

Like the previous steps, make sure to wait a few minutes for the setting spray to absorb into the skin before moving on. After all your hard work, you don’t want to trip up at the last hurdle. Patience is always key!

How To Stop Makeup Creasing Under The Eyes?

Under-eye, creasing is extremely common but can quite easily be remedied. Make sure, to begin with, hydrating eye cream and pat gently into the under-eye area being cautious not to pull or rub the delicate skin.

Once the cream has fully absorbed, use your gel primer to add a touch to your under-eye area.

When you have also added your foundation (a little goes a long way) you can also add a small amount of concealer, a shade or two lighter than your foundation shade.

Make sure to blend the concealer in well with your brush or sponge and leave it to dry slightly into the skin before adding a light dusting of translucent powder to the same area.

This process will set your under-eye makeup in place no matter what you go through during the day. You can then finish with a little setting spray for a bright-eyed and ready-to-go look.

Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of age and simply, being human. Embracing laughter lines and wrinkles can be an extremely positive experience for many.

But that doesn’t mean we should put up with creased make-up. Particularly when we just want to enjoy our make-up. By following our guide, you will surely be able to enjoy your make-up for much longer without creases creeping in.
