By Sophie Joaman • May 13, 2024 • 6 mins read

Makeup should be many things: it should be fun, creative, and empowering. However, one thing it should never be is damaging.

Along our journey with makeup, we often learn a lot about applying products to our skin, but we don’t always know how to remove them properly.

While most makeup products are harmless when used correctly, it’s essential to learn how to care for your skin and face, especially when taking off your makeup at the end of the day.

Take eyelash glue, for example. While harmless when used on your eyes, eyelash glue is not always easy to remove.

Many people are unaware of the best methods to remove adhesive from their eyes, which can result in harm to the lashes through pulling, scrubbing, and tugging.

This can ultimately lead to the unintentional removal of natural lashes, something you undoubtedly want to avoid at all costs.

If you’ve ever found yourself in this situation before (don’t worry, all of us fake eyelash wearers have been there at one time or another), you’ll understand that it’s not always easy to get rid of leftover glue when removing your fake lashes.

Fortunately, we have all the solutions for removing eyelash glue without causing unnecessary damage.

Ways to Remove Eyelash Glue Without Damage:

Gentle Makeup Cleanser

A gentle makeup cleanser is your best friend when it comes to removing makeup. Whether you have sensitive skin or not, having a gentle cleanser to hand is always a good idea.

If your skin is sensitive, this type of cleanser is especially suitable for you. For stubborn eye makeup, including eyelash glue, using a cleanser to break up the residue can help prevent damage to the lashes.

Method:

– Start by saturating a cotton pad with the cleanser and hold it carefully against each eyelid for a few seconds to allow the product to break down the glue.

– Gently wipe the cotton pad across your lash lines using delicate downward motions to pick up the leftover glue, avoiding tugging or pulling on the lashes.

– Repeat as needed.

– Wash your face with warm water and pat your eyelids dry.

Oil-Based Cleansers

Oil-based cleansers are highly effective in removing eyelash glue from the eyes while also keeping the lashes well-conditioned. If you have dry skin, oil cleansers are an excellent option for you.

They can also help maintain the health of your lashes. However, those with oily skin/ eyelids may prefer to avoid oil-based cleansers.

Method:

– Apply a small amount of oil cleanser to a cotton pad or bud and sweep gently across the eyelid.

– Massage the cleanser into the lash line and leave it for a few seconds to break down the remaining glue.

– Use a clean cotton pad to remove excess oil from the eyelid, being careful not to pull at the lash line.

– Wash your face again with warm water and pat dry.

Eye Makeup Remover

Sometimes you need to call in the big guns, and eye makeup removers are just that.  Specially formulated to melt away makeup, eye makeup removers are pros at getting rid of adhesive residue and waterproof formulas.

They’re also intended to be as gentle as possible on the skin, so you can rest assured that your lashes will be well looked after when you use them.

Method:

– Start by saturating a cotton pad with the eye makeup remover and hold it carefully against each eyelid for a few seconds.

– Gently wipe the cotton pad across your lash lines, making delicate downward motions to pick up the leftover glue without causing damage.

– Repeat as needed.

– Wash your face with warm water and pat your eyelids dry.

Regular Oils (Coconut, Olive, etc.)

Natural is always best. You might even have coconut and olive oil already in your cupboards at home, but did you know that they are brilliant in helping to remove your eye makeup (yes, even that pesky eyelash adhesive), while also caring for your lashes at the same time.

Oils effectively work to breakdown the glue particles without causing damage, so are well worth using in your makeup removal routine.

Method:

– Apply a small amount of oil to a cotton pad, bud, or your fingertips and sweep gently across the lash line.

– Leave the oil to work for a few seconds to a minute.

– Wipe the excess oil off with a clean cotton pad, ensuring you are careful not to pull your eyelids.

– Rinse your face with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel, ensuring all glue has been removed.

Things to Avoid When Removing Eyelash Glue:

Now that you know the most effective ways to remove eyelash glue, here are some things to avoid.

Using Abrasive Materials

Using anything abrasive such as rough towels or exfoliating mitts for example, can cause friction and irritation on your lashes, causing damage. Scrubbing in that area can also cause problems for you further down the road.

Your lashes are delicate, so Instead, opt for soft cotton pads and other gentle materials that will be kinder to your lashes.

Picking at your Lashes

Picking eyelash glue off with your fingers or even other tools is never a good idea and can actually cause your natural eyelashes to fall out or become damaged.

While it feels impulsive to pick at your lashes, try and avoid excessive forces on your lashes where possible.

Using Harsh Chemicals

It goes without saying, but using harsh chemicals on or around your eyes can cause a whole host of problems including irritation to the eyes and harm to the lashes.

Products that have been formulated specifically for the face and eyes are going to be much more gentle on the skin and are the only ones that you should be using.

Skipping Your Makeup Removal

So there’s a tiny bit of eyelash glue left over on your lashes, that’s a problem for tomorrow’s you right? Wrong.

While it might not always seem like a big deal, leaving your makeup on overnight can lead to infections, irriation and damage to the skin’s surface. So do yourself a favour before you go to sleep and make sure you get rid!

By following these tips and techniques, you can effectively remove eyelash glue without causing damage to your lashes, ensuring they stay healthy and beautiful.
